Blood Clots – What Can We Do?

Blood Clots are also known as thrombi, and form inside major blood vessels, and are the major cause of strokes, heart attacks and other cardiovascular conditions. Because blood clots rarely present symptoms it is important to screen on a yearly basis.

Blood clotting will occur after a cut to the skin within minutes and this is a healthy response. It becomes a problem when the clotting occurs inside the healthy blood vessels. When the platelets become activated to clump together by coming in contact with damaged arterial walls or because of other nutritional deficiencies, a genetic predisposition, and poor dietary habits – it is then that you have a problem. And when these platelets are activated they become sticky, their shape will change and they easily clump together, causing a clot.

One of the main factors that cause unhealthy clots is the production of fibrin, which helps to bind the platelets of the clump together. Fibrin is the end product of the coagulation factors that occurs with just one molecule becoming active. This can explode to up to 30,000 molecules of fibrin at the site of the injury on the arterial wall.

There are certain factors that may cause a buildup of fibrin causing the platelets to get sticky and they include: smoking, a high-cholesterol diet, late stage pregnancy, nutrient deficiencies, free radicals (usually cased by inadequate antioxidant nutrients), low essential fatty acids, liver disease and a diet high in saturated fat, low in fish and greens, vegetables and fruit. Also prolonged sitting on long air flights and this can put at risk of developing a pulmonary thrombosis.

It is often the blood clots that form in the legs or another body part that break loose and then block one of the arteries to the lungs. Some ways to prevent this on an airline flight would be to get up and walk the aisle every hour or so, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, stretch periodically, constrict and relax the muscles of the abdomen and do some deep breathing; slow, deep breaths.

If you are taking aspirin on a daily basis as a preventive therapy then you may find it beneficial to begin a gut rejuvenation program to start the healing of the gastrointestinal wall. Also helpful would be to do a bowel cleanse and gut rejuvenation several times a year when taking aspirin daily.

Garlic, onions, hot peppers, and ginger all help to decrease the fibrin formation and the platelet stickiness, reductions in both will help to prevent a stroke or a heart attack. Fish oils are also helpful to reduce clotting. Use granulated garlic on food as a regular, everyday spice. Eat more cold-water fish – a minimum of 3 times per week and decrease your sugar as this also increases platelet stickiness.

Exercise helps to guard against heart attacks and stokes by helping the body’s natural mechanism to dissolve blood clots. And it was found at Duke University that women taking oral contraceptives could reduce their risks significantly with exercise.

One of the more helpful herbs to prevent blood clots is Hawthorne berry.

The juice that will help is that of garlic, beet, carrot celery, parsley and spinach; drink 8-12 ounces per day.

Researchers in Japan have shown that nattokinase, an enzyme that comes from soy, can dissolve blood clots sometimes in as little time as just 2 hours. So, goes without saying this will help with prevention also.

The supplements that are helpful include: vitamins B6, B3,C, E, zinc, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, magnesium, manganese, lipotropic factors (used for liver metabolism of fat) and bromelain.
