What Does Acupuncture Do For The Body?

Acupuncture is an alternative medical treatment system in which the main method of treatment consists of using fine needles to ‘puncture’ the skin of the patient. This insertion of needles is done on specific points of the body such as wrists, neck and backbone, as, according to the traditional Chinese system of treatment, disease or pain is the result of a fault or deficiency in the flow of Qi or vital energy and when the skin is punctured at any point in the body known as acupuncture meridian, the body responds by concentrating energy around the point of puncture. This balances the imperfections in energy flow and the patient is cured.

Acupuncture is a part of traditional Chinese medicine and according to the system of the Chinese medicine, a blockage of Qi occurs when a person follows an unhealthy lifestyle. A blockage of Qi in the hand can cause stomach pain or liver trouble. What an acupuncture practitioner does is predict the precise point of the blockage and insert needles so that the block is broken by the subtle electric charges produced by the interaction of the needle with the minerals and salts in the blood. Acupuncture is a drug-free therapy and has no side effects.

Acupuncture is believed to be unique for its ability to elicit natural medicines and healing substances from within the body itself. Bio-chemicals are believed to relieve pain and there is evidence to show that insertion of needles produces bio-chemicals that help in healing. The immune system of the body can also be stimulated with the help of acupuncture to release antibodies and fight bacterial infection, inflammation and weakness. There is also proof that when certain acupuncture points are stimulated, the neuro-chemicals in the brain are released which alleviate pain and suffering and increase the feel-good factor of the patient.

Acupuncture treats the energy meridians in the body to be invisible fields of energy. There are a dozen chief meridians that are connected to as many organs of the body. They are called organ meridians and are connected to the heart, spleen, lungs, intestines, stomach, gall bladder, liver kidneys and bladder. There are other meridians called as circulation meridians and sex meridians. Another kind of meridians are the triple warmers that include the adrenal and thyroid glands. These meridians contain more than three hundred points of acupuncture which can be used for inserting needles according to the infirmity of the patient.

Patients suffering from osteoarthritis and low back pain are among those who have benefitted most from acupuncture. Those suffering from tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome and headache have also had relief from the acute pain that accompanies the malady. Pain can be treated effectively with acupuncture because treatment with needles possibly releases peptides and opioids along the central nervous system. The needles also cause a stimulus complex by which the working of the neuro-endocrine system is also changed. Many medial establishments are working towards making acupuncture part of mainstream medicine and treatment.
